Premium Materials & Construction

We source our merino wool exclusively from certified farms in Australia and New Zealand, where sheep graze on natural pastures without supplemental feeding. The 18.5-micron fiber diameter creates a sweater that feels luxurious against skin while providing remarkable insulation.
Our Italian mill partners use low-tension knitting machines that preserve the wool’s natural crimp and elasticity. This process results in a fabric that resists pilling and maintains its shape through years of wear. The Helsa Asta Fairisle Sweater undergoes a gentle fulling process after knitting, which interlocks the fibers without creating the stiffness common in cheaper wool garments.
Sizing & Fit Guide

The Asta follows our relaxed contemporary fit—roomy enough for comfortable layering without appearing oversized. We recommend ordering your standard size for a classic fit, or sizing up one for a more oversized silhouette that works beautifully with slim-fit trousers.
Size Medium measurements: 44-inch chest, 26-inch center back length, 34-inch sleeve length from center back neck. The ribbed hem sits comfortably at the hip without riding up during movement. Shoulder seams are positioned slightly forward to accommodate natural shoulder slope and prevent fabric bunching when you raise your arms.
Care & Maintenance

Despite its luxury feel, the Helsa Asta Fairisle Sweater requires minimal special care. We recommend machine washing on the delicate cycle in cold water with a pH-neutral wool detergent. Turn the sweater inside out before washing to protect the fairisle pattern from abrasion.
Never hang your Asta to dry—the weight of water-saturated wool will distort the shoulders and sleeves. Instead, gently press out excess water with a clean towel and lay the sweater flat on a drying rack away from direct heat or sunlight. Reshape while damp to restore the original dimensions.

Your Questions About the Asta Fairisle Sweater
The Asta provides medium-weight insulation ideal for temperatures between 40-60°F. The 2-ply merino construction and fairisle pattern create natural air pockets that trap warmth without bulk. It's warmer than single-ply fine-gauge sweaters but lighter than chunky cable knits.
We designed it specifically as a layering piece—wear it over a t-shirt in mild weather or under a jacket when temperatures drop below freezing. The 14-ounce weight strikes the perfect balance for three-season wear from early fall through late spring.
We strongly recommend against machine drying the Asta or any merino wool garment. High heat causes wool fibers to contract and felt together, resulting in irreversible shrinkage and stiffness.
Instead, gently press excess water from the sweater using a clean towel, then lay it flat on a drying rack away from direct heat sources. Reshape while damp to maintain the original dimensions. The Asta typically dries completely within 12-18 hours at room temperature with adequate air circulation.
We currently offer the Asta in three colorway combinations: Charcoal base with cream and rust accents, Navy base with grey and burgundy accents, and Oatmeal base with forest green and camel accents. Each colorway features the same traditional Nordic-inspired geometric pattern.
The dyes are applied in small batches using low-impact processes, so slight variation between production runs adds to the handcrafted character. All three colorways are designed to coordinate easily with neutral wardrobes and pair well with denim, chinos, or wool trousers.
No, the Asta's 18.5-micron merino wool is classified as superfine and feels soft directly against skin for most wearers. Merino fibers are much finer than traditional wool breeds, which eliminates the prickling sensation associated with coarser wool.
If you have particularly sensitive skin or known wool allergies, we recommend wearing a lightweight base layer underneath for the first few wears. The sweater softens further with each wash as the fibers relax and bloom.
Some pilling is natural with genuine wool and actually indicates quality fibers rather than synthetic blends. To minimize pill formation, turn the Asta inside out before washing and avoid washing with rougher fabrics like denim or towels that cause friction.
Remove any pills that do form using a sweater comb or battery-operated fabric shaver—we include a comb with every order. Pilling typically decreases after the first 3-4 wears once loose surface fibers are removed. Never pick pills by hand, as this can pull longer fibers and create holes.
Both pieces feature identical fairisle patterns and merino wool construction. The pullover sweater has a crewneck and ribbed hem, while the cardigan offers an open front with six natural corozo buttons and patch pockets at the hip.
The cardigan weighs slightly more due to the button placket reinforcement and falls about one inch longer for proper coverage when worn open. Both styles follow the same relaxed fit philosophy and sizing measurements. Many customers own both pieces for maximum styling versatility.
We knit the Asta at our partner mill in Northern Italy's Biella region, known for textile excellence since the 15th century. The mill specializes in traditional jacquard knitting techniques required for authentic fairisle patterns.
Our merino wool is sourced from certified farms in Australia and New Zealand, then shipped to Italy for spinning and dyeing. Each sweater's care tag includes the specific production batch number and origin farm for complete supply chain transparency.
