Materials & construction

Materials & construction

We build every Helsa trench coat with a 60/40 cotton-polyester shell treated with durable water repellent, so light rain beads off instead of soaking through. The fabric weight balances wind resistance with breathability—you won’t overheat on mild days.

Double-stitched seams at stress points reinforce durability, and the full lining prevents cling while keeping you comfortable across a wide temperature range. The same attention to lasting quality that defines our broader outerwear collection carries through every panel and closure on this coat.

Sizing & fit

Sizing & fit

The trench runs true to size with a relaxed fit through the shoulders and chest, tapering slightly at the waist when you cinch the belt. Sleeve length is designed to hit just past the wrist bone, covering the back of your hand when arms are at rest.

We recommend ordering your usual size if you plan to layer over light knits or blouses. Size up one if you regularly wear chunky sweaters or blazers underneath. The adjustable belt and cuff straps let you dial in the silhouette whether you prefer a streamlined or looser drape.

Styling versatility

Styling versatility

Wear the collar upright and buckled for maximum wind protection, or fold it flat for a cleaner neckline. The neutral palette works equally well with denim and sneakers or tailored trousers and heels.

The detachable belt means you can wear it open for a relaxed, coat-over-the-arm vibe or cinched to define your waist. Hidden snap tabs at the back vent let you close the pleat for a sleeker profile when you’re sitting or adjust airflow when you’re walking.

Perfect weight for spring and fall
I’ve worn this trench almost every day since it arrived. The fabric is just heavy enough to block wind but breathable enough that I don’t sweat on warmer mornings. It looks polished over work clothes and casual over jeans.

Finally a trench that fits my shoulders
Most trenches pull tight across my back, but the Helsa cut gives me room to move without looking boxy. I ordered my usual medium and the sleeves are the perfect length. The belt adjusts easily so I can change the silhouette.

Great quality, runs slightly long
The construction is excellent and the buttons feel sturdy. I’m five-four and the hem hits mid-calf, which I actually like, but if you’re shorter you might want to budget for hemming. The water resistance works well in light drizzle.

Holds up to daily commuting
I bike to work and this coat handles rain, wind, and bag straps without losing shape. After six months the fabric still looks crisp and the lining hasn’t pilled. Worth every dollar.

Timeless style that goes with everything
I wanted something I could wear for years without it looking dated. The neutral color and classic lines mean I can dress it up or down. The interior pocket is big enough for my phone and keys.

Best trench I’ve owned
The adjustable cuffs actually stay put and the collar doesn’t flop when I button it up. I’ve gotten compliments every time I wear it. It’s my go-to layer from October through April.

Trench coat questions answered

The coat is water-resistant with a DWR finish that repels light rain and mist. It will keep you dry in drizzle and short showers, but it’s not designed for heavy downpours. For extended wet weather, we recommend layering with an umbrella or choosing a fully sealed raincoat from our collection.

We recommend dry cleaning to preserve the water-repellent finish and maintain fabric integrity. If you need to spot-clean between professional cleanings, use a damp cloth on marks and hang to air-dry. Machine washing may compromise the DWR treatment and cause shrinkage in the lining.

The trench is cut to layer over blazers and structured clothing, so it runs roomier through the chest and shoulders than a tailored jacket. If you wear a size small blazer and plan to wear the trench over sweaters or suits, stick with a small. If you prefer a closer fit for wearing over shirts only, consider sizing down.

We currently offer the trench in classic khaki, navy, and black. Khaki is our most versatile option and pairs with nearly every wardrobe palette. Navy works well for business settings, and black provides a sleek urban look. All three colors feature the same construction and finish.

The belt ships threaded through the coat’s back belt loops but is fully removable. You can wear the coat open without the belt, tie it loosely in front for a casual drape, or cinch it tight at the waist for a defined silhouette. The belt loops are reinforced so frequent adjustment won’t cause wear.

The trench is designed as a transitional layer for temperatures roughly between 40–65°F. It blocks wind and repels moisture but doesn’t provide insulation for freezing weather. For colder climates, layer it over a wool sweater or consider pairing it with one of our insulated liners that button into the interior.

The hem falls approximately to mid-thigh on someone five-six, offering coverage without restricting stride. Taller wearers will find it hits closer to upper-thigh, while petite customers may see it reach closer to knee length. Exact measurements are listed in the size chart on this page.
